Why Commercial Contractors Choose Synthetic

Let's talk about the number that doesn't show up on any invoice.

Not the cost of oil. Not the cost of a filter. The cost of your backhoe sitting dead on a job site in August, your crew standing around on your dime, and a customer who is — let's say — less than thrilled. That’s the number that keeps fleet owners up at night.

That's the number commercial synthetic oil is actually solving for.

I'm Don Archer. I've been helping commercial contractors, landscape companies, construction operations, and ag businesses protect their equipment with AMSOIL® synthetic lubricants for years. And one of the first things I tell every new customer is this: the sticker price on oil is almost irrelevant. The real question is what you're spending — and losing — downstream.

Let's break that down.

What 'Cheaper Oil' Actually Costs You

Here's a scenario I've heard more times than I can count: a landscaping company is running six zero-turn mowers and two skid steers. They're buying conventional oil in bulk because it's cheaper per quart.

It makes sense on paper, but what does their maintenance schedule look like?

Oil changes every 100–200 hours. That's 6–8 oil changes per machine per season, minimum. That adds up to a lot of downtime — scheduled and unscheduled. That's labor to do the change. That's oil and filters. And if they're running hard through July and August, that's also wear that's compounding on expensive equipment.

Now run the same equipment on AMSOIL  Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil. Oil change intervals extend up to 600 hours in many applications (drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis). Same equipment, but drastically fewer service stops, less labor, and less exposure to the kind of heat-induced wear that turns a $50,000+ piece of machinery into a repair bill. The oil that costs more per quart often costs significantly less per operating hour. That's not a marketing claim — that's math.

Commercial Equipment Is Different (And Why Generic Oil Advice Doesn't Cut It)

Here's something that drives me a little nuts. Most oil advice out there is written for passenger cars under standard driving conditions, moderate temperatures, and regular service intervals.  This is the bare minimum for your daily driver. It has nothing to do with a diesel engine pulling a full load on a Georgia job site in 95-degree heat.

Commercial equipment runs harder, longer, and hotter than almost anything in the consumer world. We're talking:

  • Diesel engines under heavy, sustained load

  • Hydraulic systems cycling thousands of times per day

  • 2-stroke and 4-stroke small engines running at full throttle for hours at a time

  • Gear drives and chaincase systems in mowers, tillers, and compact equipment

  • Seasonal extremes — equipment sitting cold in winter, then running hot all summer

Conventional oil breaks down faster under those conditions. The base oil degrades. Viscosity goes out of grade. Oxidation accelerates. And once you're running degraded oil in a critical engine or hydraulic system, wear is compounding every hour.

AMSOIL synthetic oil is formulated specifically to hold up under sustained heavy load. The base oil is more stable. The additive package is more robust. And critically, it maintains its viscosity at high temperatures, when your equipment needs protection most.

Extended Drain Intervals: The Hidden ROI Nobody Talks About

If I had to pick one thing that makes the most tangible difference for commercial operators, it's extended drain intervals. This is where synthetic oil, specifically AMSOIL, pays for itself in ways you can actually put a number on.

Think about what happens every time you do an oil change on a piece of commercial equipment:

  • The machine is down — even if it's just for 30–60 minutes

  • Someone has to do the work — your time, a tech's time, or a mechanic's bill

  • You're buying oil and filters

  • You're disposing of used oil

  • You're creating an opportunity for something to go wrong — over-tightened drain plugs, wrong filter, etc…

Now multiply that by every machine in your fleet, every service interval, all season. It adds up fast.

Many AMSOIL customers in commercial applications extend oil change intervals by 2– 3x compared to conventional oil — always following the manufacturer's drain interval guidelines and using oil analysis to confirm results in their specific applications. Fewer changes means less downtime, less labor, and less exposure to service-related issues.

One landscape company owner I work with runs a fleet of commercial mowers. After switching to AMSOIL, he cut his oil change frequency in half. So he’s not just saving on oil, he’s getting hours back in the season and taking on more jobs instead of babysitting maintenance schedules.

What to Look for in a Commercial Synthetic Oil Program

Not all synthetic oils are created equal, and not all dealers are set up to help you figure out the right product for your equipment. Here's what matters:

Application-specific formulation

Your gasoline or diesel engine, your hydraulic system, your gear drives, your 2-stroke handhelds — they all have different needs. A  premium synthetic oil program matches the right product to each application. AMSOIL has specific formulations for all of these, and part of my job is helping commercial operators map out what goes where.

Compatibility with equipment warranties

A common concern: will switching to synthetic void my warranty?

Here's something a lot of people don't realize: it's actually illegal for an equipment manufacturer to void your warranty just because you used a non-OEM lubricant. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to choose the products you trust — and that includes AMSOIL. A manufacturer can only deny a warranty claim if they can prove the lubricant caused the failure. If the oil didn't cause the problem, the warranty stands. Period.

AMSOIL products are Warranty Secure™ — meaning they're designed as high-performance replacements for OEM-branded lubricants and won't put your factory warranty at risk. And unlike some oil companies that limit coverage after a certain mileage, AMSOIL's Limited Warranty has no mileage cap. They stand behind their products for as long as you use them.

If a dealer ever tells you otherwise, you can file a complaint directly with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint — and I'm always happy to help you navigate it. Learn more at amsoil.com/freedom.

Oil analysis as a management tool

For fleets with significant equipment investment, oil analysis is a smart addition. It tells you what's actually happening inside your engines — whether intervals are holding up, whether there's early wear showing up, whether a problem is developing before it becomes a breakdown. It's cheap insurance on expensive machinery.

The People Business Behind the Product

I started Archer Synthetics because I believe the commercial space deserves better than a search bar and a guess. AMSOIL makes great products – that part’s easy. What's harder is knowing exactly what your equipment needs before you get there. That's where I come in. Think of this site as the conversation we'd have before you order — and if you'd rather have it in person, I'm just a call away.

I'm in the people business, not the oil business.

Commercial contractors don't have time to mess around with products that underperform or vendors who disappear after the sale. Protect your profits, equipment, and reputation by using AMSOIL products in your company’s equipment.

FAQ: Commercial Synthetic Oil

Is commercial synthetic oil worth the cost for small fleets?

Yes — especially for small fleets. When you're running 3–10 machines, one unplanned breakdown can wipe out weeks of profit margin. The cost difference between conventional and  AMSOIL is minimal compared to the risk of a single equipment failure during peak season.

Can I use AMSOIL synthetic oil in older equipment?

Generally, yes. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are compatible with most commercial equipment, including older machines. The key is matching the right product and specification to your equipment. If you're unsure, reach out, and I'll help you verify before you order.

What's the best synthetic oil for commercial diesel engines?

AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil® is the flagship for heavy commercial diesel applications. It's engineered for high-output diesel engines running under sustained load — exactly the conditions commercial equipment faces. For specific recommendations, I'm happy to match product to equipment.

How do I know if my oil change intervals are actually safe to extend?

Oil analysis is the best way to confirm this for your specific equipment and operating conditions. It's an inexpensive test that tells you what's actually happening inside your engine — whether the oil is holding up, whether there's wear building, and whether it's time to change or safe to continue. Think of it as a check engine light that actually gives you useful information.
